South Florida's Hard Water Problem

Why Miami Pools Need Acid Washing More Often

Miami-Dade's water supply draws from the Biscayne Aquifer — one of the most productive aquifers in the United States, but also one with naturally high calcium and mineral content. This hard water creates calcium carbonate scaling on pool surfaces, waterline tile, and equipment at a rate that's significantly higher than in most other parts of the country.

Salt pools face an additional challenge: the salt cell's pH-raising effect pushes water toward the scaling side of the Langelier Saturation Index, accelerating calcium precipitation onto surfaces. Without periodic acid washing, these deposits build up into thick, rough layers that trap algae and make the pool difficult to maintain.

What We Remove

Types of Pool Stains We Treat

Calcium Scaling

White or grey crusty deposits on pool walls, waterline tile, and equipment. Extremely common in South Florida due to the high calcium content of Biscayne Aquifer water. Acid wash dissolves calcium carbonate buildup that brushing and chemicals cannot remove.

Organic Staining

Brown, green, or black stains from leaves, algae, tannins, and organic matter embedded in the plaster surface. Common in pools near trees or natural areas throughout Cutler Bay, Homestead, and Palmetto Bay.

Mineral Staining

Rust-colored (iron), blue-green (copper), or dark grey (manganese) stains from metals in the water or corroding equipment. South Florida's well water and older copper plumbing are frequent sources.

Our Process

How Our Acid Wash Service Works

1

Pool Drain

The pool is fully drained. We verify the hydrostatic relief valve is open to prevent the shell from floating due to groundwater pressure — critical in South Florida's high water table.

2

Surface Inspection

With the pool empty, we inspect the plaster, gunite, or pebble surface for cracks, delamination, or areas requiring repair before the acid wash begins.

3

Acid Application

A diluted muriatic acid solution is applied to the pool surface in sections. The acid reacts with calcium deposits and stains, dissolving them from the surface layer.

4

Scrubbing & Neutralization

Each section is scrubbed, then neutralized with a soda ash solution to stop the acid reaction. The neutralized acid and dissolved material is pumped out.

5

Rinse & Refill

The pool is thoroughly rinsed and refilled with fresh water. We begin chemistry balancing immediately to protect the freshly exposed plaster surface.

6

Chemistry Startup

Full water chemistry startup: pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and sanitizer are all balanced to ideal ranges for a fresh plaster surface to prevent early staining or scaling.
